Grade 2 Memories

It is hard to believe that our year in Grade 2 has come to an end. I have really enjoyed working with the students this year. We have learned SO much and have grown even more. The students are fabulous investigators and wonderers. We have become great Tech Experts and have used our knowledge to inspire one another to keep going. What a lovely group of students I was privileged to teach this year.

Below is a link to a Grade 2 Memory video I put together. I hope you enjoy and are proud of all that your child has accomplished this year!!

The Best Part of Grade 2!

Students have been working all week on their personal narratives.  They were brainstorming the big idea: What was the best part of grade 2? We came up with many supporting ideas and students used their ideas to write a paragraph of their best memories of grade 2. We have some very interesting things to say about our fondest memories. Students selected an app of their choice so they could share with everyone what their best part of grade 2 was. We hope you enjoy our personal narratives. Below are some of our creations!

Please feel free to add more ideas to let us know what the best part of grade 2 was for you!

Upcoming Field Trip

This Friday (June 20) our whole school will be attending Ottawa's Summer Solstice Festival! We will get to celebrate National Aboriginal Day. We are so excited to travel as a school to attend this annual festival. Students are reminded to return their permission forms as soon as possible.

We are in need of volunteers to make our field trip possible. A note will be in your child's agenda today. If you are able to volunteer and attend the Field Trip with us, please write me a note in your child's agenda as soon as possible. We look forward to having you attend the Festival with us!

In the mean time, here is the Festival's official website: http://www.ottawasummersolstice.ca/

Ottawa Fury Soccer Clinic

A huge thank you to the Ottawa Fury for coming to our school today. Our whole school participated in a soccer clinic run by 3 fabulous professional soccer players.

Together they taught us about fair play and teamwork. They showed us how to play soccer in a safe way. They told us about the rules and how to have fun. They also taught us about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. We need to eat healthy food to have energy when playing soccer. Students in our class know a lot about making healthy food choices so they gave our soccer coaches great healthy food ideas. Way to go friends!

We even got to play a game and showed how well we work together in a team. We are so lucky to have met them and very grateful that they came all this way to help us learn about the great sport. Healthy Food Choices

During our Health unit, students explored healthy food options. We read many stories and watched videos that showed us alternate snack and meal ideas that included food in one of the 4 food groups. Students worked on an activity that had them create a healthy lunch filled with healthy food from one of the 4 food groups. We are learning that healthy eating can be tasty.
We made a list of healthy foods and categorized them into their food group. We also consulted the Wonder Website Wonderopolis to help us solve our tomato wonder...Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable?

We also posted our healthy food ideas and learning to our Healthy Eating Padlet. Click the link below to see what we've learned! Feel free to continue to add your healthy food options (and their food group) to our Padlet thinking. Some students are posting from home - WAY TO GO GRADE 2! Excellent thinking!

Missing Numbers

In Math we are currently working on solving algebra equations. Students have been looking at different number patterns to solve for the missing number using addition and subtraction. They are using math manipulatives to help them solve math problems and equations. They are also representing number equations that are equal. For instance, 4 + 4 = 2 + 6! Students are having fun with this math unit and are becoming very innovative with equal number equations. Some students are even challenging themselves by coming up with equal multiplication and division equations. Great math thinkers in grade 2!

At the Teacher Center, students played a number game to represent 10 + 5 in different ways. Excellent!

A Letter to Wonderopolis

Dear Wonderopolis,

CO says: I wondered if tomatoes are fruits or vegetables because I thought they were both. So KI tweeted to Wonderopolis with our question.
AND THEY ANSWERED US!! Here is the message they gave us:

They answered with a long explanation. Here is what we learned:
-MD says: Tomatoes are vegetables because we eat them in our meal.
-CW says: We learned that tomatoes can't be a dessert because we don't normally eat tomatoes in our dessert.
DL says: BUT in other countries like Punta Cana they do put tomatoes in their dessert.
FF says: Tomato cannot be a dessert because it doesn't go well with dessert.
MD says: We eat fruit in our dessert.
KI says: Tomatoes don't go well in desserts for example ice cream, lollipops and candy apples don't taste well with tomatoes.
CO says: Tomatoes don't taste good on snacks like ice cream.
NN says: Tomatoes can be used on pizza.
AW says: When you order pizza, people put tomato sauce on it and eat it as a meal.
HH says: The article says anything that has seeds are fruit. That is what my sister said too.
What has seeds? apples, strawberries, watermelon, kiwis, orange, bananas, dragon fruit, cantaloupe, pears, pineapple, grapes, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, cherries, red peppers, green peppers, yellow peppers, orange peppers AND TOMATOES!!!!
CW says: Usually things that grow in the ground are vegetables.

Here is our vote:
How many people think tomatoes are a fruit? 1
How many people think tomatoes are a vegetable? 9
How many people say both? 3

A huge thank to the the WONDEROPOLIS website for helping us with our wonder today! Click their website to discover other wonders that you may have!
