Whoever You Are Shared Writing

This week we participated in week 3 of the Global Read Aloud Project. We read the story Whoever You Are by Mem Fox and talked about the text-to-text and text-to-world connections. We collaborated with a partner and shared our connections and our thinking on a shared writing activity using Google Slides. Students are becoming very familiar with how to use a Slidedeck to collaborate with their peers and help them navigate the site to post our learning. Have a look below at our finished product. Additionally, students can read and share their ideas on a shared-padlet created by a teacher from the Caymen Islands. This week, the book had us think about the great things in our community and in the city we live. A few students had the chance to post their ideas to the shared padlet. Students may continue to add for homework this weekend!

Shared-Learning with the Grade 4 Class

Today students had the opportunity to participate in a shared-learning activity together with the Grade 4 class.

Our classes worked together this morning to teach one another about their respective writing projects. The Grade 4's completed personal Narrative stories while we recently completed Procedural expert posters. The goal was to have our students work together to read, to teach one another about their respective writing projects and to inform them what the writing pieces must have. After reading students were asked to post a reflection on Padlet on what they learned and what the writing pieces must have.

Our 2 classes had a wonderful time sharing together. We had fun sharing our own writing and expertise with the Grade 4's. They were curious about how we created the posters and how to scan the QR Codes to get on to the Padlet. We even taught Mme. Erskine how to scan the QR Code to get on to Padlet!

 Reading with the Grade 4's taught us about how to write Narratives. When we begin our next writing unit, students will have a better idea what Narratives must have! To demonstrate our learning, we posted our learnings on a shared-Padlet. We will re-visit this Padlet again when we officially begin our unit on Narratives. We also hope to work with the Grade 4's again! They shared a lot of great ideas with us and we hope to have the chance to learn and work with them again soon. Huge thank you to Mme. GRA Week 5 - Shared Padlet

Together with Mrs. King's Grade 3 class, we posted what we thought the Author's Message was from the story Going Places. We read our predictions and our connections on iPad apps such as AudioBoom and Tellagami. We also used Pic Collage to post our thinking on Padlet. This was a shared learning opportunity between our two classes. Students had the chance to read and view the thinking of students in our class and in Mrs. King's class. Easter

Alleluia - Jesus has risen! Happy Easter! Hope you and your families enjoyed a nice long weekend together.

We have now entered the season of Easter. Easter is a time to rejoice in the death and resurrection of Jesus. He gave us hope for new life through his death. Our word wall words focus on some important words to recall as we think about the season of Easter. Our prayer table has changed to white and we will continue to talk about all of the sacrifices Jesus made for us for the next 50 days.

Shared Learning and Inferring!

We continue to work on the reading strategy: Inferring. Today, a few students got to participate in an interactive inferring lesson. We are doing a shared-learning opportunity with Mr. Robinson's grade 2/3 class!

We started by reading a story called The Yesterday Stone. Next, we had to share an inferring reading response on Padlet. A few students from Mr. Robinson's class are also reading this story and sharing an inference on Padlet. It is a great way for our classes to connect and to share our thinking and understanding using the Inferring reading strategy as our guide. The goal is to have students share their learning, and view other students' perspectives.

New Reading Strategy: Inferring

This week we focused on a new reading strategy called Inferring. We we infer, we use what we already know + what is in the book to help us understand what we are reading. We use our background knowledge + clues from the pictures or the text to help us figure out what the author is saying in between the lines.

This week we used the story Stellaluna to introduce us to the concept of inferring. We pair-shared some ideas while reading the story.

Students also wrote a reading response to the following question: What do you infer (think) might happen to Stellaluna if Mother Bat never found her. Students had to come up with their own opinion and explain WHY. When we explain our thinking, we are adding more details. We wrote about it and tweeted about it too. Have a read at our tweets below. Kindness Week

Kindness Week is a weeklong initiative that ran from February 14-21. The initiative started right here in Ottawa and is promoted on Twitter using the #kindottawa hashtag as well as the Twitter address via @kindottawa. 
At our school, we participated in a number of school and class initiatives to spread kindness to our friends, our family and to our school! Our class got the opportunity to collaborate both at school and online with a few other classrooms.

At school, we posted a wonder on our Twitter Wall together with Mrs. Swan's Grade 3 class. Our wonder...How do you make Assumption School a Kinder Place? We brainstormed together what that looks like in our school. We talked about how we make our school kind as well as what other people (like teachers, the principal or our friends) do to show kindness around us. Our class was so proud to post their tweet on our Twitter Wall. The grade 2's and 3's use this wall to share with the school their ideas and their learning. Excellent ideas everyone. Finally, we used Twitter to connect with a few classrooms about how we can be kinder. Twitter is a great way for us to share our thinking and to connect with other classrooms. It is another way that we are practicing our writing and communication skills. New Reading Comprehension Strategy

Today we started talking about a new reading comprehension strategy. We will be working on retelling a story. When we retell a story, we are focusing on the important details. We are also using the Go Map to help keep us on track. Today we read a story called Snow Day. We used a new technology tool in our classroom called a document camera. The document camera allowed us to do a shared read aloud where we each got a turn to read pages of the story.
The story is projected on our SmartBoard so we can all take part in the read aloud.

After reading the story, we talked about the beginning, middle and end and focused on only the important details. We will continue to talk about retelling stories for the next little while. You can help your child retell a story and focus on the important details by using keep on track words like First, Next, Then, Last and Finally. 

We will continue to use the document camera for more shared reading opportunities and to showcase student work. 

2D and 3D Geometric Properties

We continue to work with identifying the geometric properties of 2D and 3D shapes. We are also talking about lines of symmetry in various 2D shapes.

Yesterday, Mrs. Swan's class sent us a wonder on Twitter. They asked us to find out what the line of symmetry in a trapezoid was. We had to Google what a trapezoid was. We learned that it is a quadrilateral. We also learned that a rhombus is another type of quadrilateral during a shapes review on our SmartBoard. Quadrilaterals are shapes that have 4 sides. Today we wondered what a heptagon was. It is a 2D shape with 7 sides and 7 vertices.

Today we built models of 2D and 3D shapes using toothpicks and marshmallows. We also described their geometric properties (sides, vertices, edges and faces). Our models are in our school bags - ask your child to describe the 3D shapes. How many faces, edges and vertices?
And just for fun, a 3D shape hunt was sent home in your child's agenda. They can look around at home to find some 3D shapes in places like the kitchen or their bedroom. Happy hunting!

Advent Liturgy

This morning our class along with the grade 3 class led the 2nd week of Advent Liturgy! We have been preparing all week for this liturgy. Our classes did a wonderful job of singing our 3 songs and doing all of the readings. We were so proud of their great work!! A special thank you to the parents who were able to join us this morning. It was so wonderful that you could attend today!

During the liturgy, we talked about the theme of peace. Our 2 classes wondered about this theme and created a video to share what peace meant to us as we wait and prepare for the birth of Jesus at Christmas. We showed the video to the school today and then had a discussion as a school how we can prepare our hearts during the Advent season. 

In addition to the movie we created as a class, we watched a special video that talks about the story of Advent through a social media perspective. It ties in perfectly with our school board's focus on being safe, responsible and kind digital citizens.  What would the story of Advent look like if it happened in modern time? Shared-Twitter Thinking and Learning

Together with Mrs. Swan's grade 3 class we created a Twitter wall in our school. We are using the wall to share our thinking and learning using the similar learning opportunities our classes participate in.  


Last week our 2 classes participated in similar problem solving and kindness activities. We were happy to hear that the grade 3's also participated in the kindness paper person activity. Our Twitter wall is a way for our 2 classes to share our thinking and learning about how we can choose to make a positive choice in a problem situation. 

The wall is located close to the lunch room. We hope to inspire other students to make positive choices when faced with any sort of problem or issue (whether big or small)! 

Our classes have already used the online version of Twitter for shared learning opportunities. We will continue to watch one another's learning on Twitter as well as use the Twitter Wall in our school to share our learning in many ways over the year.
